Is there an Anti-ageing Diet?

Ageing is inevitable. Whether you are 16 going on 17 or 89 going on 90 – your body is aging. Cells age because of the external and internal stressed faced by the body. Pollution, poor lifestyle habits and several other factors cause the entry of free radicals into the body and free radicals oxidise cells (very similar to oxidation of iron in the formation of rust). When cells are oxidised they are destroyed along with their DNA profiles and this leads to inflammation in the body which is the first stage in leading up to a disease as severe as cancer. Having said that, there are ways to keep body cells safe from excessive oxidation and age gracefulls.

ANTIOXIDANTS – These are the good guys that help in preventing the action of free radicals on human cells. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals. By preventing the damage of cells, antioxidants play an important role in preserving cells and as a result slowing the process of aging.

Antioxidants can be found in a wide array of foods like almonds, oranges, kiwis, grapes, guavas, green leafy vegetables – which are abundant in Viatmin C and E; potent antioxidants. Foods with a high fat content lead to inflammation in the body, so it is best to stick to low fat foods and consume them in moderation.

The Mediterranean diet which includes olive oil, with its monounsaturated fats, plenty of green leafy vegetables which are rich in antioxidants and low fat cheeses is one of the ways to keep aging at bay. A diet which limits the amount of carbohydrate, fat and increases the consumption of fruits and vegetables will help prevent free radical damage and inflammation of cells.

Eating foods that a best suited to your blood type minimize the possibility of improper nutrients causing cell death. Foods containing nutrients that are required and well received by the body help enhance cell health and longevity. Inclusion of low carbohydrate fruits will add the all-important antioxidant touch!
